Chafee Appoints Interim Director for Health Dept.

Dr. Michael Fine will serve as the interim Director of the Department of Health when current Director David R. Gifford leaves the position tomorrow, Governor Lincoln Chafee announced yesterday.
Dr. Fine has been Director of Medical Services for the Department of Corrections since 2010, where he has overseen a $23 million budget in a department that cares for 10,000 to 20,000 people a year and 3,700 people at any given time, with a staff of over 100 physicians, psychiatrists, mental health workers, nurses, and other health workers.
A graduate of Haverford College and the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Dr. Fine completed his residency with the Brown University Program in Family Medicine at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island in Pawtucket.

Dr. Fine steps in for Gifford, who had served as Director since 2005. A search for a permanent replacement is currently underway.
