BREAKING NEWS: Health Dept. Director Resigns

The director of the Department of Health, Dr. David Gifford, announced his resignation tonight.
Chafee’s office said the Governor accepted the resignation with “great regret.”
“During his tenure, Dr. Gifford provided clear and steady leadership in the pursuit of improved public health for the citizens of Rhode Island,” Chafee’s office said in a statement. “His effective marshaling of resources during the swine flu epidemic of 2009, his success in attracting federal grant money to the state, and his advancement of numerous important public health initiatives will serve as a lasting legacy to his directorship.

A replacement is expected to be announced next week.
