One of the co-founders of Black Lives Matter (BLM) Rhode Island is officially supporting former Republican President Donald Trump in 2024.

Mark Fisher, who attended St. Raphael Academy and lived in Rhode Island for close to twenty years, said he considers himself an independent — and that he has become “disillusioned” by the Democratic Party.

“The Democratic Party and Joe Biden haven’t done anything to address the problems in my community. Barack Obama didn’t do anything for us, either,” said Fisher, who moved to Maryland last year.

“I want to shine the light on my community and those communities that have been marginalized,” said Fisher, who works as a marketing consultant and has a goal of being a full-time motivational speaker.

Fisher said when he got to the Maryland-DC area, he “found common ground” with some in the BLM community about the January 6th insurrection.

“I feel like it was a setup — the whole thing could have been prevented and handled differently,” said Fisher of January 6. “Now, they’re handing out [prison] sentences like Halloween candy.”

Fisher says that the Democratic Party is 'a racist party that strikes at the heart of the black family and the nuclear family.'

“The Democrats have become intoxicated with power, and the Department of Justice has been weaponized,” said Fisher about his opposition to the Biden Administration. "Biden needs a commission on reparations. He’s been flip-flopping for so long, I have no respect for him. And we need to be focusing on our country before sending money overseas.  I’ve become frustrated with their policies and the lack of initiative in our community.”

When asked what he thought of Trump’s track record of anti-Muslim and anti-immigration comments, Fisher said he is focused on the Black community.

“My stance is people have ears and eyes to formulate a conclusion for them. For me, it’s about me and my community,” said Fisher. “I’m not going to bash anyone and throw people under the bus. I’m here to shine the light on my community and those communities that have been marginalized.”

In 2021, Trump had called a BLM street painting in New York City a “symbol of hate” — but for Fisher, he is in full support of the former President.

“When you talk about ‘Black Lives Matter,’ it’s not a monolith,” said Fisher, who said he would “love to sit down” with the former president. “I don’t think Donald Trump would have a problem with me. We agree on the same things.”

Fisher's comments have been picked up nationally; “Black Lives Matter Leader Endorses Trump: 'Everybody Else Sucks,’” reported Newsweek last week.

When asked about Trump’s personal scandals — including Stormy Daniels E. Jean Carroll — as well as pending criminal charges, Fisher said that he doesn’t believe they matter to voters.

“If America has taught its people anything throughout the Donald Trump era, it’s that people don’t care about that kind of stuff. If it doesn’t affect them personally, they don’t care,” said Fisher. “They’re focused on the steak and not the peas.”

"The more they indict [Trump], the more popular he becomes," he said.
