Thursday, December 02, 2021
Rhode Island is now number one in both the increase in hospitalizations and the increase in cases for COVID of any state in the country.
The double dose of data top-ranking paints a dark picture for Rhode Island over the next month in its battle against the virus
In the past 14 days, Rhode Island has seen the greatest percent increase in the number of COVID hospitalizations in the country, according to tracking data by the New York Times.

The Times also ranks RI as number tops in the country in the percentage increase in cases. Rhode Island also reported 861 new cases — the highest one-day number of cases since last January. According to the Times, the number of cases reported has increased 51% in the past two weeks.
The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) reported on Wednesday that hospitalizations have increased to 169.
In addition, RIDOH data shows the transmission rate continues to climb — now to 377.2 per 100,000 population in the past seven days.
The state’s action level is 100.
RIDOH also reported 3 additional deaths — this is 20 in the past eight days and brings the total number in RI since March of 2020 to 2,935.
On GoLocal LIVE on Wednesday, Dr. Michael Fine warned Rhode Islanders that the state is headed to one of its most difficult periods of the pandemic and urged those under age 80 to wear masks in public and to immediately get boosters.
He urged that those over age 80 and above to stay out of public settings during this period of high transmission rates.
Omicron in the U.S.
Earlier on Wednesday, the CDC announced the first confirmed U.S. case of the Omicron variant has been detected.
According to the CDC, "The California and San Francisco Departments of Public Health have confirmed that a recent case of COVID-19 among an individual in California was caused by the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529). The individual was a traveler who returned from South Africa on November 22, 2021. The individual, who was fully vaccinated and had mild symptoms that are improving, is self-quarantining and has been since testing positive. All close contacts have been contacted and have tested negative."
Genomic sequencing was conducted at the University of California, San Francisco and the sequence was confirmed at CDC as being consistent with the Omicron variant. This will be the first confirmed case of COVID-19 caused by the Omicron variant detected in the United States.
