COMING THURSDAY: RI’s Man and Woman of the Year

For TIME magazine, the Man of the Year designation started with Charles Lindbergh in 1927.

Over nearly a century, TIME named both heroes and villains, as the designation is not for the most likable, but for the individual who had the biggest impact over the year.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Churchill and Roosevelt captured the cover, and so did Stalin and Hitler. In 1999, TIME changed the title to "Person of the Year."

GoLocal, after its first year in 2010, began a similar annual designation — not of the best or the brightest, but of the people who had the biggest impact on Rhode Island.

In previous years, GoLocal selections included doctors, politicians, actors, showmen, community leaders, and entrepreneurs.

As GoLocal wrote about the 2013 Woman of the Year selection, Gina Raimondo:

"Lightning Rod. No woman in Rhode Island creates more positive and negative reactions than GoLocalProv’s selection for Woman of the Year in 2013. Her supporters and critics have passionate opinions about her. For some, she is a villain, and they believe she is motivated by Wall Street interests. Her supporters see her as the best Rhode Island has ever produced and one of the few leaders ever to take on the toughest issues facing the state."

On Thursday, GoLocal will make its annual selection public.
