50 Greatest Living Rhode Islanders - 2018 Version

50 Greatest Living Rhode Islanders
First compiled in 2016, GoLocal has updated the list of the 50 Greatest Living Rhode Islanders.

The list has been brought up to date for a number of reasons — one member has died, another has pled guilty to serious federal charges, and a third has been charged with serious criminal violence.

The additions to the list are individuals who are outstanding Rhode Islanders who have done extraordinary things to enhance the state and even the world.

In developing the initial list in 2016, GoLocal reached out many of Rhode Island’s experts and influencers in a range of fields to ask them who are the greatest living Rhode Islanders. The criteria was defined, but of course, has elements that are amorphous. First, they need to have lived and work in Rhode Island — they need a significant connection.

Here is who had come off the list:

Richard Grosvenor, painter, passed away in 2017
Richard Grosvenor, Painter

He passed away in 2017.

Born in France, educated at Harvard, Grosvenor has been the head of the art department at St. George’s for decades.

A brilliant watercolorist, Grosvenor was selected by the White House Historical Society to paint a scene of the White House for their bi-centennial calendar for the year 2000. That same year, the Newport Art Museum honored Grosvenor with a 50-year retrospective of his artwork. Grosvenor was also commissioned by the Tall Ships Committee to create an oil painting commemorating the Tall Ships’ visit to Newport in 2000.

Paz pleaded guilty to domestic assault
Vinnie Paz, Professional Boxer

In March of 2018, he pled "no contest" to domestic assault for assaulting his girlfriend and he received a one-year suspended sentence and one year of probation.

But not long after he was sentenced, he told the media he was innocent. This was just the latest brush with the law.

Paz, formerly Pazienza, fought 60 professional bouts at the Lightweight, Light Middleweight and Super Middleweight weight classes.

He won the IBF World Lightweight Championship. His overall record was 50 and 10, and he fought in one of the golden ages of boxing. He fought Roberto Duran, Roy Jones, Jr., and Joe Frazier, Jr.

Far from perfect, he has been arrested a number of times on a range of charges. His colorful life story is the subject of a feature movie, "Bleed for This," developed by Executive Producer Martin Scorcese.

Flynn is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to federal charges
Michael Flynn

General, National Security Advisor

When selected, Flynn was a high flying member of the campaign of Donald Trump. He was mentioned during the summer of 2016 as a possible Vice Presidential pick.

"A surprise name on the list is retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a national security advisor to Trump who has emerged as one of the most buzzed-about veep contenders, sources familiar with the deliberations said.

On December 1, 2017 Flynn was charged by the Justice Department for lying to the FBI. The charges are tied his meeting with Russian officials. CNN says he will plead guilty.

Each of the two counts carries a penalty of up to five years in jail. Flynn could be looking at ten years in jail. Legal experts say the guilty plea is an indication that he is cooperating with the investigation being carried on by Robert Mueller.

To be selected for the list, one simply could not have just attended college in RI and then gone to do great things nor could they have worked just a small portion of their careers. Thus, former Brown University President Vartan Gregorian who served as President of Brown does not qualify, not does Family Guy creator and RISD grad Seth MacFarlane.

To be a living great Rhode Islander - this must be your state in residence -- or spirit.

How "Greatest" Were Chosen

In developing this list of greatest living Rhode Islanders, it was a challenge. Those bigger than life leaders —like political titans Bruce Sundlun, John Chafee, Claiborne Pell are not easy to replace. And, some of our most talented have moved out of Rhode Island and are now living and working elsewhere pursuing their amazing careers. They are no longer connected to RI.

What was refreshing was how many of Rhode Island’s greats are tied to our colleges and universities -- a cornerstone to Rhode Island's success. Each on the list was distinct and very few on the Greatest Living are also on GoLocal's biannual 50 Wealthiest and Most Influential. Great does not equate exclusively to wealth.

Some on this list are well known in the state, but many have greater awareness in their field outside of Rhode Island. The list is meant to spark discussions about what we value and how excellence is achieved.

Finally, please share your thoughts (respectively) as everyone on this list deserves recognition and has made great contributions -- they may not make your list, but they did make ours. Enjoy the greatness as pound for pound no state may have more talent.
