Naval War College Professor Terence Roehrig joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on LIVE ahead of the upcoming summit between President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un next week in Vietnam.

“In my view, first of all there has to be a very formal statement that indicates there is agreement on what the simple word ‘denuclearization’ means,” said Roehrig. “There have been differences in regards to that — does that mean North Korea denuclearizes? North Korea is believed to perhaps have a more expansive definition of what that means and that may entail some removal of US troops on the peninsula, perhaps an alteration to the Alliance and things that go with that — so a common definition of what denuclearization means is going to be important despite the fact that Kim has said that he agrees with that goal but it has not been fully framed the same by both sides.

Roehrig, a Professor of National Security Affairs and the Director of the Asia-Pacific Studies Group at the War College, has been a Research Fellow at the Kennedy School at Harvard University in the International Security Program and the Project on Managing the Atom and a past President of the Association of Korean Political Studies. He has published numerous books, articles and book chapters on Korean and East Asian security issues, North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, the U.S.-South Korea alliance, human rights, and transitional justice.

“The second piece that’s going to be very important is a specific timeline of some sort that shows a detailed plan to reach denuclearization,” said Roehrig. “One of the criticisms that came out of the Singapore summit last June was there was no specific timeline.”

“Now I think you have to be careful about that assessment because that meeting came a little more quickly than typically happens. There wasn’t much time for lower-level officials to negotiate the details before the leaders, but this time there has been much more opportunity for various officials to meet and talk about the details to try to come up with a more formalized plan,” said Roehrig.
