University of Virginia Political Science Chair Jennifer Lawless said that the campaign styles between Democratic nominee Joe Biden and President Donald Trump — after the latter held numerous rallies with attendees not wearing masks — could play out at the polls in November.

“The juxtaposition between the way [Biden and Kamala Harris] are holding their campaign events and the Trump team is clearly deliberate,” said Lawless. “I think it sends a very obvious signal to voters that if you are worried about the coronavirus, if you are worried about people not wearing masks, if you are worried about the continuation of infection, then Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are the candidates for you — because Donald Trump’s campaign events right now look like they did in January and February of last year.”

Lawless spoke to Trump’s strategy of emphasizing his focus on reopening the economy.

“The problem with that argument is that under his watch, America stopped moving. Now that’s not to say that he was responsible for the coronavirus -- if he would have actually implemented a plan that would have addressed it earlier, I don’t think that he would be paying the price that his now among Democrats and some independents,” said Lawless.

“It’s very difficult to make the case that you’re the one to get the economy moving you’re the one to reopen the country when the country closed and economy slowed under your watch,” she said.

“I think he’s sort of stuck and not really sure how to navigated his incumbency status.”
