Sigma Chi Fraternity at Bryant University Aims to Raise $50K for Cancer Research

The Bryant University chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity will be hosting their annual “Derby Days” philanthropic fundraiser from April 8 to April 12 on the Bryant campus, after last year’s event raised more than $26,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Institute in less than four weeks.
The brothers attribute their success to the involvement of more than 200 students from all walks of the Bryant community.
“It was an incredible feat that so many Bryant students from all different backgrounds came together to raise of money for cancer research and cancer patients,” said Tondo, who is in the Class of 2019.
Bryant’s chapter became the smallest of Sigma Chi in North America to raise more than $20,000 in the fraternity’s history, and was awarded entry into the prestigious “20K Club” for chapters that surpassed the goal.
All proceeds are delivered directly to the Huntsman Cancer Institute; the Salt Lake City research hospital has made renowned breakthroughs that are impacting the world of cancer research forever.
Each summer, as a thank-you to the schools who have raised $20,000 or more, Huntsman Cancer Institute flies a Sigma Chi brother from each of those chapters to be honored in a ceremony at the hospital. Tondo earned that honor last summer, and saw first-hand how their money was being utilized.
“After I visited the hospital, I realized how important our contribution was. The fundraiser is so much bigger than ourselves – you can meet the lab technicians and patients that our money is impacting.”
The chapter has set a goal of raising $50,000 for 2019’s Derby Days, and plans to do so by engaging the Bryant community more than ever before.
