“Recommend RI” and Help State's Economy Bounce Back From Pandemic

Riel — the Vice President of Sales and Service — talked about how not only the industry was crushed during the pandemic, but the state as well, as millions were lost in revenue.
“The pandemic was devastating to our industry because our job is to bring people together, which was exactly what we were told not to do,” said Riel.
“Typically in a year we host about 275 events across Rhode Island — a lot of them in the Rhode Island Convention Center and surrounding hotels, but we do fan out across the state,” he added. “During the pandemic, we actually had to cancel or move just under 200 groups. Those 200,000 visitors were not able to come and the financial loss of their spend was well over $80 million.”
Recommend RI
Now, the PWCVB is urging Rhode Islanders to “Recommend RI,” to bring people “back” for meetings and conventions — and help spur the economy.
According to the PWCVB, “You can help us to bounce back.”
“Everyone belongs to something. It could be a church group, a professional association or a softball team. No matter what you belong to, chances are there is an organization that governs it or gives it structure,” says the CVB. “Recommending that your group bring an event to Rhode Island could mean millions of dollars for our local economy. Plus, it's a great way to show your home state off to your friends and business colleagues. “
