Central Nurseries' Pagliarini Discusses Return of RI Home Show

The Home Show is back at the RI Convention Center from April 7-10, after a two-year hiatus.
For Pagliarini and her family, the show is an opportunity for their company to show its talents and capabilities.
The 86-year-old Central Nurseries is a leading commercial and retail nursery that supports the largest construction projects and the smallest backyard upgrade.
"I'm the fourth generation of the company -- it was started by my great-grandfather 86-years-ago," said Pagliarini. "We're 86 years old this spring [and] we do just about everything -- we have a garden center in Johnston, a big nursery up in Chepachet, and we work on projects all over southern New England.
Garden of the World
At the Home Show, Central Nurseries will be exhibiting “Gardens of the World" -- they provided the plant material and the other garden accents and put it all together with the help from the schools and other partners.
"This year the theme is Gardens of the World which is fitting, because it's been quite a world we've been in the past few years. We have over 10,000 square feet of landscape material -- trees, shrubs, perennials flowers, bulbs," said Pagliarini.
There are close to 200 countries in the world, and each has a unique climate, plant material, and design style. Larger countries with different regions may have more variety in their landscaping. Depending on exactly where you live Rhode Island and nearby MA and CT, it ranges from USDA Plant "Hardiness Zone" 7b to 5a. Hardiness zones are based on the average annual extreme minimum temperature during a 30-year period in the past, not the lowest temperature that has ever occurred in the past or might occur in the future.
Many other environmental factors, in addition to hardiness zones, contribute to the success or failure of plants. Wind, soil type, soil moisture, humidity, pollution, snow, and winter sunshine can greatly affect the survival of plants. The way plants are placed in the landscape, how they are planted, and their size and health might also influence their survival.
