Mayor Avedisian Update on the Warwick Teachers Contract Fight on LIVE

Warwick Mayor Avedisian
Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian appeared on GoLocal LIVE on Wednesday, where he said he understood people are "frustrated" with the ongoing teachers' contract dispute.

Two schools cancelled classes due to teachers calling in sick in large numbers over the past week.

Avedisian spoke with GoLocal News Editor on the status of the contract negotiations, noted that while he does not have an active role, he continues to have a seat at the table.

"A couple of things -- we've seen in the last week some very heated exchanges between members of the school committee and teachers union," said Avedisian. "I understand people are frustrated, people feel this process has gone on for a long time."

"The problem is, as that war of words escalates, it's harder and harder to get them back to the table," Avedisian continued. "I I sent a letter to the parties today saying I under the frustrations. We have mediation next week, I want it to be a productive meeting..[and people] to come with open minds."

Mediation, and Arbitration

Avedisian noted that while mediation is ongoing, he expects movement on the arbitration side shortly.

"We have mediation that's been ongoing for a little over a year -- actually, a little under two years. At the same time, they're going through the arbitration process,' said Avedisian. "I fully expect that there will be a couple of things that will be decided -- what's binding is non-monetary. If they're binding both parties have to accept. There are going to be non-binding rulings that are going to require more discussion and negotiation."

"My goal today is to take the next week, have everyone cool down, approach mediation with an open mind and then be ready for the sessions we have to have," said Avedisian.
