Cranston native Robert DellaVentura is starring on a new reality show hosted by actor Taye Diggs, and the first episode airs this coming Monday.

DellaVentura will be featured as a participant on streaming-giant Hulu’s “Back in the Groove” — about three single women in their 40s — and 24 men vying for their affections.

Host Diggs famously starred in the 1998 hit movie “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.”

“It’s a pretty different show than any reality show out there,” DellaVentura, a single father who is an accountant by day, told GoLocal.

So how did he come to be a budding reality show star?

“They actually reached out to me on Instagram,” said DellaVentura of getting in touch with producers at Hulu. “It’s funny. I don’t have a lot of followers, I thought maybe I was being pranked. But I reached back out to them to see what they had to say.”

“It was actually something I had wanted to get into for a while,” said DellaVentura, of considering pursuing opportunities in television and film at the urging of friends and family.

Here’s what Hulu has to say about the show:

“Whether they find the perfect fling, friendship, true love, or something in between, this is their chance to take charge and break through the double standards older women face every day,” says Hulu. “And they’re going to have a lot of fun doing it! The show is hosted by Taye Diggs, who knows a thing or two about getting into the groove.”

“I generally do date older women,” said 29-year-old DellaVentura, a Cranston West and Rhode Island College graduate, who also has a Master's degree from Southern New Hampshire University. “I’m a dad, and maybe I have that dad vibe. Maybe that’s what they wanted.”

He said it was his hope to find a stepmom for his eight-year-old son that really prompted him to do the show, which was filmed in the Dominican Republic.

And that’s just about all DellaVentura says he can say about the show before it finally airs.

“I still live in Cranston,” said DellaVentura. “I first asked my son if I should do the show. It wasn’t just to find love, it was for him as well. He wants a stepmom. He’s got a mom and a stepdad which is great, but my goal is to find a stepmom.”

DellaVentura said he is going to a friend’s house on Monday for a big viewing party with "close to 40 or 50 people" for the first episode.

And what does his son think about his big debut?

“He thinks it’s cool I’m on TV,” laughed DellaVentura.
