Providence Keeps Parks Full of Summer Performances

The best venues for performing arts may be in Providence's neighborhood parks, thanks to this summer's Celebrate Providence! Neighborhood Performing Arts Initiative.
With Roger Williams, India Point & Riverside Parks added to an already robust list of locations, the City's Department of Art, Culture + Tourism is gearing up for another fun summer of free, live entertainment in every neighborhood of the city. Celebrate Providence! 2010 Neighborhood Performing Arts Initiative will usher in opera, jazz, drumming, dance and theater in more than 36 performances, to the neighborhoods of Providence through September 3rd.
Hopkins Square Park (Charles Street and Branch Ave) – Opera Providence will perform on July 11, 18, 25 and August 1st at 5pm.
Fargnoli Park (Smith and Nelson Streets) – Local artists will perform live music every Tuesday from July 6th – August 10th at 6pm hosted by Friends of Elmhurst.
India Point Park – Enjoy the hottest DubStep, electronic and hip-hop music featuring performances by Providence’s own DJ’s Damian Ewens and Dave Allyn and many other collaborators Thursdays on August 12th, 19th and 26th at 5pm hosted by Friends of India Point Park.
Dexter Training Grounds – West Broadway Neighborhood Association will present a series of performances Thursdays on July 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd at 6pm including Santa Mamba and Louisiana Hayride.
Burnside Park (adjacent to the Bank of America City Center) – RPM Voices will perform gospel music on July 7th at noon.
Riverside Park (Aleppo Street) – Local artists will perform live music Wednesdays on August 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th at 6pm hosted by the Olneyville Housing Corporation.
Brown Street Park – The Wippets, Superchief Trio and Infusion Experience are among the artists that will perform Wednesday, July 7th, 14th 21st and 28th at 5pm hosted by Friends of Brown Street Park.
Roger Williams Park – Performances Fridays on August 13th, 20th, 27th and September 3rd at 5:30pm including “Ta’ to’ Nitido”, a play by ECAS, an African drum band performance, Idolo 1110 talent contest presented by WPMZ 1110 and a merengue performance by Conjunto Tipico.
Garibaldi Park (Atwells Ave) – Performances Mondays on July 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th and August 2nd at 6pm will include Orchestra Romanza with Dominic DiPasquale, classical guitarist Ron Murray, Italian troubadour Lino DelSignore and percussionist Artie Cabral.
Peace Street Park – Performance on August 28th will feature celebratory music styles that engage community members of all ages. Performers include What Cheer? marching band and the Broad Street Studios Youth Street Band.
Lippit Park – Local artist will perform live music on Sunday, August 15th from 1pm – 5pm hosted by the Summit Neighborhood Association.
The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) recognized the Neighborhood Performing Arts Initiative in 2005 with the prestigious City Livability Award, an honor bestowed upon mayors for exemplary leadership in developing and implementing programs that improve the quality of life for residents.
