New England Mafia's Old HQ on Federal Hill is Deer Tick's New Album

Deer Tick's upcoming album has a uniquely Providence feel.

Federal Hill native John McCauley and the band this week announced that "Coin-o-Matic" is the name of its June release, and McCauley explained the inspiration.

"The guys in Deer Tick and I are very excited to announce our next album, titled Coin-O-Matic, out June 5.  It’s a bit of a relief too because it really feels like we’ve been holding onto it for a long, long time," said McCauley on social media.

"Ideas started coming together for this album about seven years ago when something inside of me felt that we had to write a really 'Providence' record. Maybe it was because I was living far away from Rhode Island, and I was a young dad at the time, but I was constantly getting hit with waves of nostalgic feelings for the city I grew up in," said McCauley.

And for their upcoming album, Deer Tick went all in on Providence.

"I told the guys I really wanted us to take a stab at more narrative-based songwriting and nail everything down to a certain time and place.  Writing on assignment isn’t always immediately the most inspiring thing so the guys and I took our time, waiting patiently for inspiration to come," said McCauley. "In the meantime we wrote, recorded, and released plenty of other material knowing that one day Coin-O-Matic would materialize."

"When that time finally came we made the decision to record it and produce it ourselves in our own studio (in Rhode Island, of course)," he added. "I’d like to think the gambit paid off because I’ve never heard a studio recording of our band operating with this level of confidence before. Not everything about getting older sucks."

And for those not in the know, McCauley explained just what "Coin-o-Matic" was, back in the day.

"For those of you who don’t know, Coin-O-Matic was the name of the vending machine business on Atwells Avenue in Providence, RI that served as the headquarters for the New England Mafia back in their heyday," he said.
