NEW: 12th Annual Rhody Awards for Historic Preservation Announced

The 12th annual Rhody Awards for Historic Preservation -- which honors individuals, organizations, and projects for their contributions to the preservation of Rhode Island’s historic places -- have been announced.
Preserve Rhode Island (PRI) and the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission (RIHPHC) presented the awardees, which include "an innovative preservation professional, Warwick’s city historian, a family who restored their historic Newport home, and an array of exciting preservation projects including a diner, a lighthouse, and a country church."

Antoinette F. Downing Volunteer Service Award to Henry A. L. Brown, historian, writer, advocate, community leader, and living landmark of Warwick
Frederick C. Williamson Professional Leadership Award to Mary Anthony for her visionary leadership of the 1772 Foundation and her efforts to support capital projects, revolving funds, real estate training for preservationists, and efforts to integrate land conversation and historic preservation
Historic Homeowner Award to Peter and Sue Metzger for the restoration of Sunnyside, a gracious Colonial Revival-style home designed by McKim, Mead and White in Newport
Historic Preservation Project Award to Caragh Development for the rehabilitation of Pawtucket’s Church Hill Grammar School (1889-90) to create 14 market-rate apartments
Historic Preservation Project Award to the City of Newport for its careful restoration of the historic window sash at the Edward King House Senior Center, a National Historic Landmark built in 1847
Historic Preservation Project Award to developer Urban Smart Growth for the multiphase transformation of Pawtucket’s turn-of-the-century Hope Webbing Mill into Hope Artiste Village, with art studios, loft-style apartments, professional offices, commercial spaces, night clubs, restaurants, light industrial units, and the historic Breaktime bowling alley
Historic Preservation Project Award to Speaker of the House Nicholas A. Mattiello, President of the Senate Domenick J. Ruggerio, the Joint Committee on Legislative Services, and the Division of Capital Asset Management for a comprehensive restoration and upgrade of the majestic Rhode Island State House Legislative Chambers (1895-1904) in Providence
Historic Preservation Project Award to Southeast Lighthouse Foundation for the truly painstaking disassembly, repair, fabrication of missing elements, and reassembly of the cast iron and masonry structural system of Southeast Lighthouse (1875), a beacon on the bluffs of Block Island
Historic Preservation Project Award to the Hopkins Hollow Cemetery Corporation for working with a team of talented craftspeople on a loving restoration of the Hopkins Hollow Church (ca. 1860) in Coventry
Historic Preservation Project Award to owner Jonathan Savage for his ten-year-long, labor-of-love effort to relocate and restore the Miss Lorraine Diner (1941) outside the Lorraine Mill in Pawtucket
