MUSIC: The Psychedelic Furs Heats Up Fete
Friday, June 21, 2013
How often do you get to say you get to see an old-school new wave rock band from the 80's that's still going strong? On Tuesday night in The Ballroom at Fete, The Psychedelic Furs performed and there was a huge buzz around the show. You saw people of all ages here and everyone was pumped to see a band who haven't played in Providence since god knows when. Like a cherry on top of a sundae, local rockers Hope Anchor opened the festivities as well. It was that gut feeling which made you know it was going to be one hell of a night, and it definitely was at Fete.
Hope Anchor
I've always heard about Hope Anchor through every social crevice in the Providence music scene, but this was my first time seeing them and I was absolutely impressed. You could call them a rock & roll band but that would do them an injustice, they have a violin that adds a different dimension as well as having a rare energy exuding from their songs that has a post-punk vibe but the riffs give it a whole bunch of gumption. "Get Away Blues", "Here We Go", "Got To Be Alright", "Nobody Is There", "Losing My Mind", "Deluxe Pocketknife" and "Reason" were pretty damn good and I felt myself getting closer to the stage with each song. Hope Anchor is currently working on putting out a new album within the next few months and after seeing them live I'm absolutely looking forward to giving it a listen.
The Psychedelic Furs
After a while of people schmoozing and boozing, The Psychedelic Furs came up to a roaring applause and headlined the night in classic fashion. It always cool when a band that has those high pitched keys also brings a saxophone and a riffing guitar to the forefront, that's what makes The Furs as cool as the other side of the pillow. "Highwire Days", "Heartbeat", "The Ghost In You", "Wedding Song", "Heartbreak Beat", "Until She Comes", "Here Come Cowboys", "Pulse", "No Easy Street", "Danger", "All Of This And Nothing", "Love My Way", "Mr. Jones", "Wrong Train" and "Heaven" had the crowd grooving and by the end had them clapping and cheering for what seemed like forever. It not like they stopped though, The Furs were merely taking a break. They came back and kicked off the encore with "Pretty In Pink" and "Sleep Comes Down" that ended one hell of a show. One of the most refreshing moments you could ever experience as a live music fan is when a band that's been around for over 30 years doesn't show their age. From what I've seen, The Psychedelic Furs haven't let up one bit. It's Fete, did you expect anything less? Log on to fetemusic.com to see when the next legendary act is hitting up the place.
