An orchestral feel took over the stage this weekend at the Columbus Theatre, when Mother Falcon descended from Austin, TX. Photo: Brittany Radcliffe.

It's not every day that you get to see a band that has over 20 members fill up a room and the Columbus Theatre was just the place to see such a rare occurrence with Mother Falcon from Austin, TX headlining a show at the upstairs stage. Ben Sollee was the opening act and it surely was a pleasant experience that was kind to the ears.

Ben Sollee

A unique solo musician from Kentucky, Ben Sollee started things off by entertaining the audience with his beautiful songs and funny stories. "Sometime" got an enormous applause from the people in attendance and he had a comical story about how he got into playing the cello in elementary school because his teacher played really short notes on the instrument to educate the class. Ben has this cool rustic blues thing going on that really came through with "How To See The Sunrise" and "The Globe", but he also wasn't afraid to play the soft, rhythmic & Richie Havens-esque little ditty "It's Not Impossible". The best thing about his performance was that it was purely acoustic. He didn't need a mic and every song sounded impeccable, which is a true testament to the excellent acoustics the Columbus Theatre has. Ben has a new album out called Half Made Man, after seeing him live its another piece of music I have to include on my bucket list.

Mother Falcon

In an instant, the stage filled up with guitars, cellos, mandolins, pianos, violins, saxophones, a trumpet, an accordion, a drum set and even a gigantic oboe. Mother Falcon swarmed the stage to give the night an orchestral feel and I was excited to see what they had in store. A one of a kind spectacle featured an epic and moving rendition of Radiohead's "Lucky", "Pennies" with Ben Sollee joining the band on stage for an unbelievable jazz jam and "Dirty Summer" which had a group of people forming a mini dance party on the right side of the stage to finish off the show. After a standing ovation Mother Falcon played "To Mama" for a splendid encore that concluded a truly magical experience. Mother Falcon has an album out called You Knew, give this groundbreaking group of musicians a listen and I promise you won't be let down. The Columbus Theatre is becoming a must see venue with all of its wonderful characteristics that promise an extremely enjoyable time.
