For eight days, the Festival will present the highest quality independent films for ages 3-18. This year’s programming is as international as ever and brings to area youth a wide range of storytelling and experiences from around the globe, including Japan, France, The Netherlands, and Uruguay. The program will also include a wide variety of genres and forms—classic cinema, live action, animation, and documentary—paired with an expanded offering of “Film Talks,” PCFF’s own brand of post-screening discussions that aim to deepen understanding of subject matter and foster critical watching skills.

This yeah, the Festival welcomes local Rhode Island film maker Mitty Mirrer to present and discuss her documentary, Gold Star Children, described here along with three other films, as a preview of the 2014 line-up:

SAFETY LAST (Harold Lloyd's classic film) - All ages.

Harold Lloyd plays a clerk who comes up with a wild publicity stunt to draw attention to a department store. Like Chaplin and Keaton, his stunts are his own and the results are dangerously comical.

THE ZIGZAG KID (with Isabella Rossellini) - Ages 10 and up.

A film for kids starring Isabella Rossellini? "Yes!" we say at PCFF.

An aspiring adolescent detective teams up with a master burglar and finds out more than he bargained for about the mysterious past of his mother—and about himself.

ERNEST AND CELESTINE (Animation from France.) – All ages.

A bear and a mouse develop a one of a kind friendship that is challenged by the world they live in. Based on the classic Belgian book series by Gabrielle Vincent, Ernest & Celestine was a winner of the Cesar Award for Best Animated Feature.

GOLD STAR CHILDREN (Directed by local filmmaker and parent, Mitty Mirrer.) - Ages 10 and up.

A documentary feature that takes a close look at American children who’ve lost a parent to war and how they learn to heal alongside the now-adult child survivors of the Vietnam War.

Related Slideshow: New England’s Healthiest States 2013

The United Health Foundation recently released its 2013 annual reoprt: America's Health Rankings, which provides a comparative state by state analysis of several health measures to provide a comprehensive perspective of our nation's health issues. See how the New England states rank in the slides below.

Definitions

All Outcomes Rank: Outcomes represent what has already occurred, either through death, disease or missed days due to illness. In America's Health Rankings, outcomes include prevalence of diabetes, number of poor mental or physical health days in last 30 days, health disparity, infant mortality rate, cardiovascular death rate, cancer death rate and premature death. Outcomes account for 25% of the final ranking.

Determinants Rank: Determinants represent those actions that can affect the future health of the population. For clarity, determinants are divided into four groups: Behaviors, Community and Environment, Public and Health Policies, and Clinical Care. These four groups of measures influence the health outcomes of the population in a state, and improving these inputs will improve outcomes over time. Most measures are actually a combination of activities in all four groups.

Diabetes Rank: Based on percent of adults who responded yes to the question "Have you ever been told by a doctor that you have diabetes?" Does not include pre-diabetes or diabetes during pregnancy.

Smoking Rank: Based on percentage of adults who are current smokers (self-report smoking at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime and currently smoke).

Obesity Rank: Based on percentage of adults who are obese, with a body mass index (BMI) of 30.0 or higher.
