Do-it-yourself soil testing kits for testing soil PH level and other nutrients that might be missing can be found at Lowes and Home Depot as well as online (look for Scotts Soil Test - $15 at www.scotts.com).

Don't overwater your lawn, too much water can impact the lawn health.

Water deeply once a week. A healthy lawn needs about 1" of water per week (early morning is best)
 
Skip the "crewcut".  Mow once a week but cutting too short may result in exposed roots and dry soil.  Healthy grass height for most turf  is 2.5 to 3.5 inches.
