5 Weekend Musts: Hairspray & More

Real spring is coming. We promise. No April Fools. Now here are the five things you can't afford to miss out on this weekend.

1. Get a little Baltimore back in your life at Hairspray in South County.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday. You can't stop the beat, nor would you want to, at one of the most infectious musical of the last 20 years. Catch the opening weekend at the award-winning Courthouse Center for the Arts. Tickets $34 adults, $30 seniors and CCA members, $19 students and children under 18. 2. Laugh it off at the April Fool's Dinner and Comedy Showcase in Cranston.

Friday.  With the budgets in a shambles, the schools a mess, you have to laugh about something. Here's a night filled with comedians from Rhode Island as well as Boston, plus a family-style dinner from minestrone to roasted chicken, ziti, and fries. 3. Party down with the Derby girls at the 6th Annual Derbytaunt Ball, Providence

It's not hazing if everyone's having fun. It's the annual inauguration of the new skaters at an April Fool's themed ball. You can wear something crazy, says the publicity, but we guarantee you're going to be outclassed. Live tunes and a DJ. 7pm, $5 admission at the door. The Hi Hat, 3 Davol Square, Providence. 4. Indulge in a major Tom Waits session at the 201, Providence.

Friday. It's a great idea - pay tribute to the man who has dedicated so much of his music to the underclass. And help your fellow Rhode Islanders at the same time. The 201 hosts a Tom Waits Tribute to benefit Amos House's Soup Kitchen. 21+ only. 201 Westminster Street. 9 pm. TIckets $10. For more information, go here.

5. Drink, and judge, at Local 121, Providence.

Sunday. Can you think of a better way to spend a Sunday evening than tasting the five finalists for the new iconic Rhode Island cocktail? The winner will be featured at the opening soiree for the Cocktail Culture exhibit opening April 15 at the RISD Museum. And you will have made that dream come true. Valid ID and $10 required.
