The Kennedys
As long as Arthur keeps his distance, prepare to be blown away by all the great music this holiday weekend. Two area festivals lead your “5 Live Music Musts.”
Bluegrass on the Pawtuxet
A new festival begins today in Pawtuxet Village along the Cranston/Warwick line. The Bluegrass on the Pawtuxet Festival is a two day event featuring some of the nation’s best Bluegrass artists. There’s free music, workshops, and food trucks during the day and ticketed events at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet both tonight and tomorrow evening. Headliners include The Steeldrivers tonight, and Blue Highway tomorrow. Click here for all the details.
New Bedford Folk Festival
Head to the Whaling city this weekend for a hidden gem of a festival to experience roots, blues, world, and of course, folk music. The New Bedford Folk Festival encompasses seven stages (including two in air conditioned venues), and over 90 artists over two days. It’s a far more intimate festival than Newport and includes well known artists like Jonathan Edwards, Christine Lavin, Poor Old Shine, and John Gorka. The music starts at 11AM and goes till 9PM both days with tickets only $20 per day, $25 for the weekend and children under 12 free.

John Mellencamp at Mohegan Sun
Would you believe it’s been 32 years since we first heard that “little ditty about Jack and Diane?” You’ll hear it again along with all the hits Saturday night when John Mellencamp appears at Mohegan Sun. Of course, Mellencamp has branched out stylistically, performing more roots oriented music in recent years. Tickets are $49.50 and the show begins at 8PM in the Mohegan Sun Arena.
Steve Smith at Ocean Mist
It’s July 4th. It’s Rhode Island. It’s more than just a beach bar. It’s Steve Smith and the Nakeds at the Ocean Mist. RI Music Hall of Famers Steve Smith and the Nakeds are the perfect fit for the holiday weekend and you can find them at the Ocean Mist in Matunuck today starting at 5PM. The horns will be blasting and the good times are guaranteed!
Vans Warped Tour at XFinity
Finally, don’t miss the Vans Warped Tour next Thursday July 10 at the XFinity Center in Mansfield. Now in its 20th year, the punk/metal/rock show features over 50 bands on a number of stages playing 30-45 minutes sets. Tickets are 52.50 for the General Admission event beginning at 11AM.
