The Schemers

Every Friday, we pick some of the best area concerts in 5 Live Music Musts. This week, we’ve got a distinct classic rock feel, as we celebrate the rockin’ sounds of the 70s and 80s!

The Schemers at the Met

Want some fun for once in your life? One band that helped keep rock and roll alive in the 1980s was Rhode Island’s own The Schemers. The band’s punk-infused rock sound never veered too far from the roots of rock and roll. Led by guitarist Mark Cutler, the boys are getting together tonight at The Met for a rare gig.  Tickets are $10 and the show starts at 9PM. Look for a capsule review and photos of the show next week here at GoLocalProv.

Frampton and The Doobies at Twin River

Another big rock show is scheduled for tomorrow night at the Twin River Events Center where two powerhouse 70s acts share the bill. RI welcomes Peter Frampton and The Doobie Brothers for a full night of classic rock. Frampton just released a new album, Hummingbird in a Box, and the Doobies continue to release new material. Blues guitarist Matthew Curry opens. Check them out starting at 7PM - tickets start at $64.

Boston and Cheap Trick at Mohegan

The Saturday night 70’s theme continues full speed ahead at Mohegan Sun where legendary Massachusetts band Boston plays tomorrow night.  The band promises to bring all the classics plus a few new tunes. Joining Boston, Cheap Trick will be opening with their unique brand of rock and roll.  Both bands are getting great reviews on this tour.  If you have “more than a feeling” of nostalgia, head down to the Mohegan Sun Arena for the 8PM show. And always remember, “mommy’s alright, daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird.”

Beaver Brown Rocks Fort Adams

Newport Rocks the Fort Sunday from 2 to 8 as several bands give Fort Adams State Park a workout before the festivals arrive next month. Top billing goes to RI 80s legends John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, who seem to always sound better on a hot summer night by the ocean. A couple of top notch cover bands also appear - Eagles tribute band Another Tequila Sunrise and Hey Nineteen, a Steely Dan tribute act. The music runs from 2PM - 8PM and tickets are $35.

Avril Lavigne at Foxwoods

Finally, we’ll squeeze a talented modern rocker into the mix, as Canadian native Avril Lavigne is playing Foxwoods tomorrow night. Since her debut opening for Shania Twain in 1999, Lavigne has sold over 50 million singles and 30 million albums, making her one of the top acts of the 2000s. Tickets are $37.50 and $57.50 and the show takes place in the Grand Theatre at Foxwoods.
