Enjoy the sounds of summer with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes at the Newport Blues and BBQ Festival this Saturday.

This weekend, it’s a Super Saturday with several big area concerts.

Newport Blues and BBQ Festival

A great event comes to Newport this Saturday, July 20th. The Newport Blues and BBQ Festival features several great artists along with some tasty barbecue. You’ll be “Havin’ a Party” with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, who are headlining the show.

Southside, who helped define the “New Jersey Sound” with Bruce Springsteen, is excited to be coming to town. In an interview with GoLocalProv, he discussed the origins of the popular style. “In the late 60s, we had four musicians living in a three bedroom apartment at $116.00 a month. Bruce would come over…we listened to everything, we played everything,” including early blues, R&B, doo wop, and folk.

An incredible line-up joins Southside Johnny–the James Cotton Blues Band, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Quinn Sullivan, the Big Cat Blues Band, and Ronnie Earle and the Broadcasters are scheduled to appear. It’s an all day celebration–the grilling begins at noon. Tickets are $45 in advance, $55 day of show, Kids under 12 free. We promise, you won’t want to go home! Check the website for more details.

AmericanaramA

AmericanaramA is a festival of song led by Bob Dylan and Wilco...with support from artists including My Morning Jacket, Ryan Bingham and others. It took a while, but the “supporting” artists seem to have convinced Bob to play a couple songs together. You can count on a few surprises when these artists get together Saturday night at the Comcast Center. Show begins at 5:30, great seats still available - tickets start at $39.

Further up the road in Foxboro, mega-star Bon Jovi is at Gillette Stadium. Would you believe the “Because We Can” tour is #1 in concert earnings so far this year? That makes him a mega-star! If you’re going, you probably already have tickets–a few remain–prices run from $33 to $603. The party starts early in the parking lot, show is at 7:30.

If the price of gas (and tickets) is getting you down, GoLocal Saturday night to The Met to see The Lemonheads. The alt/indie band, known for their driving punk-rock ride through Mrs. Robinson, will make you forget all about the hot weather. Colin Ruel opens. Show is at 9:00; tix are $15 in advance, $18 day of the show.

Also on Saturday, Rhode Island favorite Sarah and the Tall Boys return to town. The full band and a stripped down version–just Sarah and husband Ian Crossman–have several area shows. Saturday night, they support Grammy winning Nashville songwriter Jim Lauderdale at the Narrows Center. It’s another incredible show in a great series at the Narrows! Concert starts at 8:00; tickets are $25 in advance, $28 day of show.

We’ll add an extra show this week on Sunday, July 21. Trust us, if you want to have a good time, check out Gogol Bordello at Lupos. The gypsy–punk band from New York City is “revealing” their new album, Pura Vida Conspiracy, next week. Show starts at 7:30. A Tribe Called Red opens. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
