Graham Nash was a Highlight at the Newport Folk Festival Saturday

Not surprisingly, Day 2 of the 2016 Newport Folk Festival defied expectations. Anyone who still thinks folk music is simply a singer and a guitar is sadly mistaken. Not that we didn’t see a few great singers with guitars, but the wide range of music this festival brings is staggering. From a punk rock diva, to R&B standouts, to traditional country, Saturday at Newport Folk had a little bit of everything. GoLocal Music Critic Ken Abrams and Rick Farrell of Mojo Photography were there and share a few snapshots of the festivities.

Bagpipes

Patti Smith

Patti Smith absolutely killed it with a set of covers and originals. She reflected the spirit of Newport with folk classics like "Boots of Spanish Leather," and Pete Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer." The Banditos

The Banditos shook everyone to life at 11:15AM on the Quad stage. Their hard driven rockabilly sound came through loud and clear on tunes like "Waitin'" and "Still Sober." They're a band to watch! (Photo: Ken Abrams)

Graham Nash

Graham Nash owned Newport for an hour Saturday offering a retrospective of his 50+ year career with poltically driven songs like "Military Madness," "Chicago," and "Immigration Man." Amy Helm

Amy Helm brought it all to the Fort Stage with her band The Handsome Strangers. She rocked original tunes including "Didn't it Rain" and "Sky's Falling" and, to the delight of those assembled, covered her father's classic "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." (Photo: Ken Abrams)
