There must be a reason the British invaded... and stayed. Few cities are as colorful or historic as Newport, and they honor our national holiday with a great lineup of Fourth of July weekend activities. Putting its waterfront location to good use, it's your number-one stop for a fireworks cruise, a clambake, and much more.

Saturday, July 3

Rum and Revolution History Walking Tour: 11:30am-12:45pm, free, Museum of Newport History, 127 Thames St, 846-0813. Explore the role of alcohol in Newport’s history with the Rum and Revolution history walking tour – stories of taverns, distillers, rumrunners, and more. Reservations suggested.
 

Sunday, July 4

Fourth of July Ceremonies: A sequence of traditional, patriotic activity... a wreath-laying ceremony at the gravesite of William Ellery in the Common Burial Ground, followed by a parade to Eisenhower Park in Washington Square for patriotic music by the Salve Regina University Community Concert Orchestra. Retired Navy Commander Walter Whitley will read the Declaration of Independence. Following the program, there will be a 21-gun salute by the Artillery Company of Newport. Free. Rose Island Lighthouse 4th of July Celebration:
5:30-10:30pm, Rose Island Lighthouse, 847-4242. A great evening of music and food is just a ferry ride away on Rose Island! Bring your appetite and your favorite lawn chair or blanket and settle in under the stars to watch the fireworks. Also, enjoy live music, and Lighthouse tours. Scenic and fun for the whole family. $85 adults, $35 for kids 6-12 and free for under 5 (fee is all inclusive).
 
4th of July Fireworks Cruise: 8-10pm, $80, starts at 49 Bowen’s Wharf, 851-1216. Enjoy Newport's 4th of July spectacular fireworks display from the water - literally. Come aboard harbor motor cruise and score the best seats in Newport.
 
Fireworks: 9pm, free, Fort Adams, 90 Fort Adams Drive, 841-0707. These bright and fun fireworks will be launched from Fort Adams and will be visible all along the waterfront.

McGrath’s Public Clambake:
6-9pm, $70 with lobster, $60 without lobster, $30 children, Fort Adams, 90 Fort Adams Drive, 841-0707. Come enjoy a traditional old fashioned (and so Rhode Island) clambake, featuring Rhode Island “clear broth” quahog chowder, clams, mussels, lobster, salad, brown bread, corn on the cob, potato, chourico, BBQ chicken, and watermelon, all prepared my McGrath Clambakes. Yum! Also, for the adults – an open bar sponsored by Narragansett Beer

Tuesday, July 6

Celebration of America (concert and fireworks): varied times, free, Naval Station (Dewey Field), 690 Peary St. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets for seating. The public may enter through Gate One, the main entrance near the Officers’ Club, beginning at 4 pm. No coolers, backpacks, glass bottles or pets allowed! Schedule of events: Concession and games for children, 5pm; Soul Power, rhythm & blues, 5pm; Salute to veterans; 25-minute fireworks display, 8:45pm.
