7 Local Ways to Burn 200 Calories

Take it high with Muay Thai Kickboxing
It may have felt innocent enough to have an extra slice of pizza, but what if you want to get rid of those 200 calories? Enjoy 7 ways to burn them and have some local fun.

1. Walk Providence's Blackstone Boulevard from one end to the other.
If you take it at a good clip of 3-4 miles per hour, that's about 60 minutes of walking, plus the vision of famous Olmsted Brothers, who created the landscape vistas of the route in 1894.

2. Take a 30-minute Muay Thai Kickboxing class in Bristol
The martial art from Thailand burns serious heat... enough that 30 minutes gets you to 200 calories. Check out classes at Ultimate Fitness Gym in Bristol, 15 Gooding Ave, 253-3539.

3. Hike for 35 minutes in Lincoln
You can be on the Lime Rock Preserve Pond Trail in Lincoln within an easy drive from Providence. The 2-mile trail running along the western edge of the Nature Conservancy's 130-acre Lime Rock Preserve has beautiful views and great local plants. In winter, this is also a great place to observe animal tracks. For details on the trail, go here.

4. Do laps for 20 minutes in Middletown
Swimming is one of the most efficient ways to exercise and burn calories, and for an outing, consider the Newport Athletic Club in Middletown, which makes its pool available to the public for a fee. You can purchase a pass for a single session, or get a better deal on 10-visit  or 20-visit punch cards. Newport Athletic Club, 66 Valley Rd, Middletown, 846-7723.

5. Take a Boot Camp class in Providence
Okay, this is such a high-burn cardio event, that you can actually burn up to four pieces of  pizza in a one-hour class. Use ropes, kettlebells, tire-flips, conditioning drills and calesthenics to burn fat and build a toned physique. $12/class, $49/month for unlimited classes. Method Fitness West, 755 Westminster, Providence, 274-6384.

6. Dance for an hour in Providence
Where else can you burn off a piece of pizza and flirt at the same time? Whether it's Waltz, Foxtrot, Samba, or Tango, there's an average calorie expenditure of 200 per hour. Rhode Island has a very healthy ballroom dance scene; consider signing up for a 3-session course on Monday nights with the Providence Learning Connection. $59, beginning 11/28. 274-9330.

7. Go off-road on your bike for 30 minutes
Mountain biking burns more than 400 calories per hour, so a quick spin on any day is going to do the job. Best spots: Lincoln Woods or the trails in Arcadia Management Area. For more information, check out RI's New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA) Web page.
