NEW: Al Forno’s Pizza Best, Says Food Network Magazine
Tuesday, August 02, 2011
Rhode Island's best pizza comes from Al Forno, according to Food Network Magazine, which has just released its nationwide feature of the 50 best pizzas in all 50 states.
In fact, the very summer pizza that GoLocal featured last week in its 5 Things You Need To Eat This Summer is what snagged the honors from the popular TV/print/Web franchise.
"Grill-marked crusts were practically unknown in America when Johanne Killeen and George Germon pioneered the grilled pizza at Al Forno in 1980," writes Food Network Mag. "They wanted to make pizza but didn’t have a brick oven, so they improvised with a wood-fired grill. Al Forno’s best is the Summer pizza, topped with tomato sauce, fresh herbs, scallions, a blend of fontina and pecorino cheese, a spicy oil and corn right off the cob."
