Sims Metal Invests in Green Technology at Providence Facility

Sims Metal, a global leader in metal recycling, announced it has invested in a new electric car flattener, replacing its previous diesel model, at the local Sims Metal site on Allens Avenue. This new electric equipment is expected to reduce the site’s CO2 emissions by 9.6 tons per year, which aligns with the company’s sustainability initiatives, as well as with the State of Rhode Island’s 2021 Act on Climate.

According to Sims Metal’s General Manager, Mike Kiwanis, the Sims Metal Providence location has invested more than $300,000 to deploy the electric car flattener, which is used to flatten end-of-life vehicles prior to transport and recycling.

“This significant investment in new, greener technology demonstrates how we are delivering on our company purpose, create a world without waste to preserve our planet, ensuring our operations have as little impact on the environment as possible,” said Kiwanis.

He said, “We also understand the importance the State of Rhode Island has placed on meeting its net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 goal, and we will continue to take every opportunity available to us through new technology to contribute to the achievement of those goals.”

 

 

The State’s 2021 Act on Climate set enforceable climate emissions reduction mandates, positioning the state to boldly address climate change and prepare for a global economy that is shifting to clean energy. The emissions mandates call for 45 percent below 1990 levels by 2030, 80% below those same standards by 2040, and fully net-zero emissions by 2050.

“I applaud the efforts of Sims Metal to reduce its carbon footprint to every extent possible well in advance of the Act on Climate’s mandates,” said Mayor Brett P. Smiley. “This is also a positive step forward for our port which needs to become an effective part of our local green economy. My Administration is committed to working with partners like Sims Metal to meet our sustainability and resiliency goals.”

The electric car flattener that was purchased by Sims Metal was manufactured by Overbuilt based in South Dakota. This equipment weighs approximately 60,000 pounds and has the power to crush up to 159 tons with state-of-the-art controls and automation.
