GoLocal CEO Josh Fenton

GoLocalProv Co-Founder and CEO Josh Fenton joined the Providence Rotary Club this week to discuss the digital media platform’s continued growth — and the future of local journalism.

“I appreciate having the opportunity to talk about GoLocal with the Providence Rotary, whose members are an integral part of our business and philanthropic communities,” said Fenton. “The role of local journalism in an age of large media corporations and out-of-state interests cannot be understated, and Rotary members understand the vital role a watchdog news organization serves.”

"Our Providence Rotary Club was honored to have Josh Fenton of GoLocalProv as our special speaker at our meeting on July 20," said Providence Rotary President Holly Applegate. "We admire Josh’s vision of giving a voice to our local community."

Fenton discussed the dramatic changes in media. "We launched in 2010 and in a decade we have grown to be one of the most valued news sources in Rhode Island -- now with more than 1.2 million visitors each month," said Fenton.

"The pace of change will only continue to accelerate -- we think we have a significant advantage over companies owned by conglomerates from elsewhere. Everyone at GoLocal is 100% committed to Rhode Island," added Fenton.

Rotary’s Service to Community

Founded in 1911, the Rotary Club of Providence is a fellowship and service organization of men and women dedicated to the Rotary motto of Service Above Self. As one of over 35,000 clubs in more than 150 countries with over 1.2 million members, the Providence Rotary serves the local community with active support for literacy and other needs related to children.

The Providence Rotary’s wide-ranging partnership with Providence's Harry Kizirian Elementary School includes placing a small library in each classroom through the generosity of a longtime member; having Rotarians read to students; and a beautification effort with Rotarians adding brightly colored paint along the corridors and creating an imaginative mural based on student drawings in the main lobby.

Proceeds from club fundraising activities support the Providence Rotary Charities Foundation, which distributes grants totaling more than $50,000 each year to the Childhood Literacy Initiative and local agencies serving children.

The Rotary’s weekly meetings feature interesting speakers and opportunities for members and guests to socialize. Fellowship activities include a bowling league, a book club and parties for almost any occasion.
