Providence Place Mall Closed for Until Further Notice Due to Coronavirus

The Providence Place Mall will be closed until further notice.
The Providence Place Mall will be closed until further notice due to the threat of the spread of coronavirus.

“As of tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17, I am also requiring that Providence Place Mall close until further notice. We want to eliminate the highest risk areas within our state and frankly, we also want everyone to take this seriously,” said Providence Mayor Elorza in his press conference on Monday morning.

Governor Gina Raimondo further urged other mayors with malls in their communities to shut them down.

Elorza added, "As kids are out of school, and families are out of work, we do not want them to congregate in these public spaces and create the circumstances that are ripe for transmission.”

Elorza’s press conference came after Raimondo ordered all dining-in at restaurants shut down for two weeks.

Under Raimondo’s order, delivery is still allowed.

Coronavirus in RI

As of Monday afternoon, there are 21 cases of coronavirus in Rhode Island. 

In nearby Massachusetts, there are more than 164 cases of coronavirus.

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker announced that schools in the Commonwealth will be closed for the next three weeks and maybe longer.

Globally, thee are more than 167,000 cases.
