Providence College names three new deans

Providence College announced the appointment of three new academic deans.

The deans are Dr. Brian McCadden, Dr. Joseph Stanley, and Dr. Jennifer Swanberg.

Dr. Brian McCadden of Narragansett has transitioned to the newly created position of Dean of Graduate Education. In his new position, McCadden will coordinate marketing, recruitment, and retention efforts for all graduate programs in the Schools of Arts & Sciences and Professional Studies and will continue to work with MBA Program leadership on various initiatives.

In addition to his new role, McCadden will serve as Director of the Master’s in Higher Education in Counseling Program, and he will direct the College’s Graduate Assistants program. Lastly, he will continue to serve as Chair of the Graduate Council, which provides policy and curriculum oversight for all graduate programs. McCadden was formerly the Dean of the School of Professional Studies, a position he has held since 2010.

Dr. McCadden received a BA in Communications from Roger Williams University, Bristol, RI in 1986; Duke University, Durham, NC; graduate program in Philosophy, 1991-1992 (non-degree); and a Ph.D. in Social Foundations of Education, 1995 (Outstanding Dissertation Award, Carolina Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, 1996), University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

About Stanley

Dr. Joseph Stanley of Hull, MA is the inaugural Dean of Global Education in the newly-named Center for Global Education (CGE) (formerly the Center for International Studies). The CGE will provide leadership in articulating and implementing the College’s vision for global education and in maintaining and strengthening PC’s wide array of international initiatives.

Stanley most recently has served as director of the Center for Global Education at Simmons College, where he also was a lecturer in the history department. Previously, he served as institutional relations manager for CAPA – The Global Education Network. In that role,  Stanley served as the primary liaison between study abroad programs and partner universities in the Northeast. He also has held appointments as faculty advisor for Binghamton University’s Discovery Program, as well as field studies coordinator for the Syracuse University in Florence program.

He earned a bachelor’s degree through the Carroll School of Management at Boston College; a master’s degree from the University of Edinburgh, and a Ph.D. in history from Binghamton University,

About Swanberg

Dr. Jennifer E. Swanberg of Lincoln is the new Dean of the School of Professional Studies. In her new role,  Swanberg will provide leadership for the departments of elementary and special education, health policy and management, and social work as well as the program in secondary education.

She was most recently a professor at the University of Maryland’s School of Social Work, with a secondary appointment in the University’s School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. Prior to moving to Maryland, she was a professor of social work and the Founding and Executive Director of the Institute for Workplace Innovation at the University of Kentucky. As part of this initiative, she also founded the Innovative Employer Roundtable, an employer-membership organization committed to developing and sharing new knowledge about innovative business strategies.

Swanberg holds a BS in occupational therapy from the University of New Hampshire, a masters in the management of human services (MMHS) from the Heller School at Brandeis University, as well as a Ph.D. in social policy from Brandeis.
