University Orthopedics announces the addition of Mouhanad M. El Othmani, MD, to The Joint Replacement Center.

Fellowship-trained in adult reconstruction, Dr. El Othmani specializes in robotic joint replacement, both inpatient and outpatient; hip and knee arthritis; total and partial hip replacement; direct anterior hip replacement for complex primaries and revisions; total and partial knee replacement; total joint revisions following infection, fracture, dislocation, loosening, and other failure modalities; and lower extremity trauma.

“Dr. El Othmani’s comprehensive knowledge of his specialty and his dedication to patient-centered care, with a particular focus on their overall well-being, ensures our patients will receive tailored treatment that is of the highest standard,” said Dr. Edward Akelman, president of University Orthopedics. “We are truly excited to welcome a surgeon of his caliber to University Orthopedics.”

El Othmani - who will see patients in Newport and at the practice’s location in Westerly - completed the Frank E. Stinchfield Adult Reconstruction fellowship at Columbia University. Prior to that, he earned his medical degree at American University of Beirut in Lebanon and completed his residency at Wayne State University and Detroit Medical Center. He is particularly interested in a holistic approach to joint replacement, with a focus on nutritional and functional peri-operative optimization, and enhanced recovery post-joint replacement.

“I don’t just treat specific joints. I treat the whole person. When a patient is in my care, it is a true partnership that continues long after they’re wheeled out of the operating room," El Othmani said. "As they embark on a journey toward restored mobility, it’s my job to guide them on a path toward a pain-free and active life while providing them with exceptional, compassionate care that is also cutting-edge."

Beyond his clinical practice, El Othmani has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles, a book, and numerous book chapters, showcasing his commitment to advancing medical knowledge and improving patient outcomes. He actively participates in national and international conferences, where he shares his expertise and presents his pioneering research. By engaging with fellow healthcare professionals, he remains at the forefront of the latest advancements in orthopedic surgery, ensuring that his patients benefit from the most cutting-edge treatments available.

RPL Adds Sales Associate Jim Given to its South County Office

Residential Properties Ltd. announced that Sales Associate Jim Given has joined the outstanding team of real estate advisors at our South County office. Jim grew up in Wakefield and attended the South Kingstown public school system. From riding the South County Bike Path to earning the rank of Eagle Scout in his local troop, He has always appreciated Rhode Island and its community. Today, he and his wife own a home in Richmond, living with their two cats and working on their farm. Whether it’s home improvements or making the most of a property’s landscape, Jim brings expertly cultivated expertise to RPL.

A growing interest in sales

After graduating from URI with a degree in horticulture, Given worked from 2014 to 2016 as the Cultivation Manager at Summit Medical Compassion Center in Warwick, one of the first licensed Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in RI. He followed this experience with work at a company manufacturing horticultural lighting as their East Coast District Sales Manager. Bit by the selling bug, he then earned his real estate license in 2023.

Given’s parents introduced him to RPL Sales Associate Beth DeSista when he first started taking the pre-licensing class, offering her support and counsel on any questions. After completing the course and interviewing with her, he found that generosity was foundational across the company. “I was really sold on the new agent assistance, the focus on continuing education, and the mentorship program RPL offers,” Given said. “From doing my research into brokerages, it seems one would be hard-pressed to find an environment of camaraderie, respect, support for the agents, and kindness to parallel that of Residential Properties.”

Greenhouses to single-family houses

Throughout the past few years, he has helped his wife with her vegetable farm business, Frontier Farm, assisting with building greenhouses, doing tractor maintenance, and manning the farmstand. In addition to his home improvement and construction skills, he also does independent sales contracting, managing wholesale accounts for a local hemp farm. “Supporting local businesses is just one of the ways I maintain connections in the community,” Given added. “I was raised in an environment where family and friends shared their expertise, learned new skills, and readily taught those skills to one another. That background was pivotal in giving me the confidence to learn how to purchase, manage, repair, and improve my home, which is knowledge I will happily share with my clients.”

An empathetic and skilled advisor to buyers and sellers, Jim is excited to share all his tips and best practices with first-time homeowners, having experienced the often daunting process himself. “I was lucky to have been able to purchase a house in 2017 due to low market prices and interest rates at the time,” Given noted. “Now I see folks of my generation struggling to enter the housing market, so my hope is to offer my own experience as a young homeowner and as a Realtor® to support my community.”
