For any news organization, it's reputation is like gold.

More valuable than any reporter or anchor without question.

Channel 10 has now issued an apology on it's web site to viewers for what is an apparent case of plagiarism involving a story first reported by the Providence Journal.

According to a written statement by Channel 10, on the night of October 10th a story was posted on turnto10.com involving the Providence Community Action Program's Wheels for Meals program. Turns out that story on the Channel 10 web site was in the words of WJAR "nearly identical" to a story that was posted on the ProJo's online blog the week before.

Channel 10 says once it became aware of the issue, the story was removed right away and took appropriate action against the employee or employees involved. The statement does not identify if one person was involved or more and it does say if the person was an on-air person or a behind the scenes type like a Producer or Assignment Editor. "NBC 10 and its parent company, Media General, have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to plagiarism. This policy is one of the pillars of our profession. Accuracy and trustworthiness create the very foundation from which that profession is perched." the statement says.

The apology is directed at viewers and goes on to say as a news organization sometimes mistakes are made when it comes to reporting original content. "When we fall short of this goal, it is important that we take appropriate action, learn from our mistakes and be open and honest with our audience."

News people ripping off other people's work is nothing new. We've experienced it here at GoLocal many times. It's just the ugly part of the news business. Hats off to Channel 10 for first off dealing with the incident swiftly and "taking action" whatever that was and also for posting it publically admitting a mistake was made.

GoLocal has questions into Channel 10 to see what action was taken but so far no word back.
