Downtown Providence’s CVS is closing. The store is virtually the only place in the center of the city to buy basic over the counter medicines and it will close on December 31.

The CVS is located at 70 Kennedy Plaza and is accessible from Westminster Street as well.

The location’s two entrances are gathering places for panhandlers. A staff person told GoLocal that the location is also heavily targeted by shoplifters -- there is nearly always security inside the store.

The closing comes as downtown Providence has a growing residential population.

"We have made the difficult business decision to close our Kennedy Plaza store in downtown Providence on January 2. As part of the regular course of business, we review all of our stores’ financial performance and lease expirations before making such a decision," said Mike DeAngelis, Senior Director of Corporate Communications for CVS.

The closure of this store is not a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our employees. Every effort will be made to help place the affected store colleagues into comparable roles at other CVS store locations in the area," said DeAngelis

About Property

The property was advertised as available for lease on the commercial real estate website Loopnet, but has since been removed.

The landlord to the building is 70 KENNEDY PLAZA INVESTORS LLC and co-owned by another corporation 200 STATE ST. The entities’ tax bills are sent to the commercial real estate firm Avison Young.

Employees have been reportedly offered jobs at other locations.

There is a CVS location at Providence Place Mall.
