McKee Says “Future is Here on Renewables” Regarding Issues Between Wind and Fisheries Interests
Wednesday, May 05, 2021
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee has addressed the ongoing regulatory issues now pending before the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council and said that “the future is here for renewables.”
“Those things are going to happen," said McKee addressing the proposed Revolution Wind project — a partnership between Ørsted and Eversource.
The project is slated to create “704 MWs of clean, affordable offshore wind power - providing 304 MW to Connecticut and 400 MW to Rhode Island.”

The dispute between commercial fishing industries and the companies is pending before the CRMC and decisions are expected soon.
The project claims it will produce approximately 460 construction jobs for the redevelopment of Rhode Island's state piers as well as an estimated 1,200 direct construction jobs and dozens of permanent operations and maintenance jobs in Connecticut and Rhode Island combined.
The comments by McKee were made during his weekly non-COVID press conference on Tuesday.
The Revolution Wind project is one of the biggest offshore wind projects now moving forward in the United States and bolstered by President Joe Biden’s policies.
In October of 2018, Ørsted announced the agreement with the D.E. Shaw Group to acquire a 100% equity interest in Rhode Island-based Deepwater Wind for more than $510 million.
The company has continued to invest in Rhode Island.
Three weeks ago, Ørsted and Eversource announced they are taking the first steps toward transforming ProvPort into a regional offshore wind hub.
The two companies announced that they will be developing a new advanced foundation component facility to support the assembly of the developers’ portfolio of Northeast offshore wind farms.
The new 228-foot long facility will be used for advanced fabrication and assembly of foundation platforms for Ørsted and Eversource’s offshore wind projects serving Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York. This facility will further develop Rhode Island’s offshore wind industry and contribute to the state’s growing blue economy.
