Newman Dignan & Sheerar, Inc., an independent investment and wealth management firm, announced today that Certified Financial Planner Richard Cavanagh has joined the company as a Senior Investment Advisor. Cavanagh has been involved in the financial services industry for more than 35 years and brings a wealth of experience to NDS.

In addition to earning the CFP designation and holding the CFA Charter, Richard also has previous experience as an insurance advisor, earning CLU and ChFC designations, deepening the resources NDS can bring to bear on all of our client portfolios.

“We are pleased to have Rich join the NDS family. Bill and I have known Rich both professionally and personally for years. His expertise and vast experience as an investment advisor and financial planner will greatly benefit our existing and prospective clients,” said NDS Principal John P. Sheerar.

Richard, a graduate of Harvard University, has managed clients’ wealth and provided them financial planning guidance as a sole practitioner, in the institutional setting, and from independent Registered Investment Advisor platforms. He has the experience and ability to manage institutional and private accounts. He has consulted with institutional insurance and college savings plan (529 Plans) entities providing oversight and ensuring investment policy adherence. He also has over 10 years of experience as a Chief Compliance Officer.

"I could not be more pleased and proud to join the NDS team,” Cavanagh said.  “I have known Bill Newman since he founded the firm with Paul Dignan and first met John Sheerar when he joined them in 1997. Richard, a lifelong Rhode Island resident, lives in Warwick with his wife of 33 years, Melinda. In his free time, he enjoys his family, hockey, golf, and barbequing on his Big Green Egg.

John J. Tassoni Jr. Named President/CEO of the Substance Use and Mental Health Leadership Council of Rhode Island

Former State Senator John J. Tassoni Jr., has been appointed as the new President/Chief Executive Officer for the Substance Use and Mental Health Leadership Council of Rhode Island, Tassoni takes over on August 20th.

He previously held the position of Vice President of Operations, Community and Government Relations for the Leadership Council.

The Leadership Council is the main advocacy organization in Rhode Island that represents agencies that provide mental health and addiction treatment, substance abuse prevention, primary health, and wellness services to over 20,000 individuals annually.

In this new role, Tassoni will work with national, state, and local leaders in behavioral healthcare to improve the quality of care for this vulnerable population, as well as partner with cutting-edge, public and private agencies to continually improve and enhance community inclusion, and support policy advancement to drive the mission of the Leadership Council.

"We are honored to have John as CEO of our Council. John is a true advocate for substance use and mental health treatment as well as affordable healthcare. His proven leadership and ability to form strong, positive, productive relationships will surely be a key in navigating the ever-changing healthcare environment in Rhode Island," said Lynn Serra, chair of the Leadership Council’s board of directors.

Tassoni is a well-known business leader, former union executive and mediator, and social advocate for issues related to addiction and recovery. He was a member of the Rhode Island State Senate, serving from 2001-2012, and has over 35 years of experience in the private sector and labor community.

In the senate, his advocacy for fair labor practices, affordable healthcare, substance abuse treatment, and assistance for the homelessness, earned him high praise among constituents and citizens alike. Open dialogue and maintaining positive working relationships has been Mr. Tassoni’s mantra, which led him to host Recovery Radio, the first radio program in the state to offer useful information to those suffering from alcohol, drug, and other addictions.  

He is currently the host of Recovery TV, which features on-air interviews with those overcoming substance abuse.

“I am humbled and honored that the Executive Committee and Leadership Board of Directors have placed their confidence in me to lead this organization. It is my goal to further strengthen the core mission of the Leadership Council and accelerate a strategic shift to capitalize on partnerships and emerging opportunities in the behavioral field, to create a more dynamic Council that will serve the needs of individuals and families dealing with affliction,” said Tassoni. “We want them to know that they are not alone and there is help and hope.”

Marc Gilchrist Joins Residential Properties

Residential Properties announced that Marc Gilchrist has joined the firm at our Cumberland office as a Sales Associate. A lifelong Rhode Islander originally from North Providence, Marc grew up with an aunt in real estate, which inspired his interest in the profession. Though he honed his skill set with a distinguished career in healthcare for over two decades, his rare enthusiasm for architecture, design, and well-executed transactions never left.

 

Big career pivot in Little Rhody

Marc is a true New Englander and is always quick to extoll its many virtues. “I love the beaches or any activity on the water,” Gilchrist said. “There’s also that indefinable charm of Rhode Island and New England.” Once he became a licensed Realtor®, Marc acted swiftly and sought out Residential Properties, knowing the sales and marketing firepower to which he would instantly gain access. “What made me want to join RPL was their renowned reputation and brand recognition,” Gilchrist noted. “I also received recommendations from current agents, who are really talented and helpful professionals.”

Spending time to map out his new career, he is eager to upskill, using RPL’s marketing technology and to enjoy the journey of homeownership with his clients. “I look forward to a long and prosperous career with Residential Properties,” Gilchrist said. “My goal is to have a better understanding of the ins and outs of the real estate industry and to learn as much as possible.”

 

The next stage

Living in the town of Hope, Marc enjoys kayaking, especially in the Wickford Village area, and time at the beach, savoring the natural beauty of our coast.  His dog and sidekick Rowen keeps him busy as well.

Marc brings an eye for aesthetics and staging to RPL, as well as hard work and integrity. Today, he is doing what he loves as a real estate professional, making homeownership a reality for all kinds of people. “I am excited to help people find their dream homes,” Gilchrist said. “Buying a home is one of the most exciting events in your life and I look forward to being a part of that with clients.”
