At an early age, I was taught about my family who immigrated from Greece and Portugal over 100 years ago. They came to America with nothing but the shirts on their backs and their pursuit of the American Dream. My great grandfather used to sell bushels of peanuts for 5 and 10 cents each at the beginning of the Cliff Walk, and he would sleep under his cart to guarantee a good spot among all of the vendors there. His son (my grandfather, Tony Spiratos) started shining shoes and became a shoe repair delivery boy. He delivered shoes on his bike and saw an opportunity to get into the dry cleaning business during the Great Depression and World War 2.
His company, The Valet Cleaners of Newport, which he built up from just himself to over 100 employees, included a huge dry cleaning plant that cleaned all of the US Navy uniforms of those stationed here. Through his hard work, my grandfather was able to buy Sea View Villa in 1945.
Ever since I was young, it has been bestowed upon me that every generation should build upon the last. To that end, through much thought, reflection, and prayer, we’ve decided that it is time to take the family legacy in a whole new direction, and I'm personally excited for the adventures that lie ahead.
Sea View Villa is a special place. It’s the only estate that has an entire view of the Cliff Walk, and because of its location, captures both sunrise and sunset. My hope is that whoever buys it will appreciate the potential and beauty I’ve always seen in it. It is time to turn over the reins of this one-of-a-kind property to someone new."
