Mistakes Cost PC in 96-90 Double OT Loss to Georgetown

Alpha Diallo had 24 points for PC, but it wasn't enough.
The Providence College Friars fell to the Georgetown Hoyas 96-90 in double-overtime on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.

PC was in a position to win the game on several different occasions, but mistakes and missed opportunities proved costly.

The Friars start 0-3 in the Big East for the first time since the 2011-2012 season.

That year, they finished 4-14 in the conference.

Things don't get easier for the Friars as they play four of their next six games on the road against opponents including nationally ranked Marquette, Xavier and Seton Hall.

Friars Fall in Double OT

With the game tied at 86 to start the second overtime period, Providence would take an 88-86 lead in the opening seconds on a layup by Nate Watson.

The Hoyas would score the next four points to take a 90-88 lead with 3:32 to play, and would later lead 92-89 with 2:08 left in the game.

After an Isaiah Jackson free throw, the Friars trailed 92-90 and had possession of the ball back with just over a minute to play.

However, on the possession, it appeared the team lost track of the shot clock resulting in an Alpha Diallo airball with 56 seconds to play.

The Hoyas would close the game by knocking down four free throws in the final 40 seconds, while the Friars would not score again.

Diallo led the Friars with 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Watson followed up with 21 points.

Mistakes Cost Friars

Providence trailed 78-75 with 2:21 left in the overtime period before back-to-back threes from Drew Edwards and Isaiah Jackson would give them an 81-80 lead with 1:14 to play.

After a defensive stop, the Friars extended their lead to 84-80 on a three by Diallo with 28 seconds to play.

However, Makai Ashton-Langford would foul Georgetown’s James Akinjo while shooting a three with 15 seconds left to put him on the line.

He would knock down all three shots to cut the Friars lead to one, 84-83.

Providence would extend their lead to 86-83 on two free throws by Diallo with 13 seconds left.

On Georgetown’s final possession, Akinjo knocked down a three with three seconds left to tie the game at 86.

On the play, Ashton-Langford went under the screen, instead of over it, leaving Akinjo wide open.

Prior to the first overtime period, the Friars held a 73-70 lead with 3.9 seconds left in regulation after a three from Diallo and two free throws from Isaiah Jackson.

On the Hoyas final possession of the half, PC coach Ed Cooley chose not to foul, instead, letting the Hoyas play the possession out.

Georgetown’s Mac McClung raced the ball up the court and launched a three from just over halfcourt that sailed through the net to tie the game and force overtime.

Poor Close to 1st Half

The Friars led by as much as 111, 36-25, following a Nate Watson dunk with 4:14 to play in the half.

From that point, PC went scoreless the rest of the half, turning the ball over four times and missing several free throw opportunities in the process.

For their part, the Hoyas were able to capitalize, ending the half on a 9-0 run to cut PC’s lead to two, 36-34, with 1:41 to play in the half.

The score would remain that way heading into the break.
