What a way to go out!

While it has been a very difficult and disappointing for the URI men’s basketball team this season, Thursday the two seniors on the team went out in style.

On Senior Night at the Ryan Center, Orion Outerbridge had a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Fellow senior Anthony Malhoit had career highs with points (21) and rebounds (9) as the Rams rolled to an easy win over visiting Fordham 78-58.

Rhode Island received contributions from throughout the line-up. Freshman Mike Powell was the only other Ram in double figures with 11 points. Jonathan “Sponge” Holton scored 5 points while pulling down 12 rebounds. Billy Baron finished with 8 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds while Dominique McKoy had 8 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.

Maybe most impressive about the win was Rhody’s dominance on the glass. They outrebounded Fordham 58-34. Part of that big edge had to do with the fact that the visitors shot just 32% from the field (25-79) so there were a lot of misses for URI to corral.

Most importantly, URI is out of the Atlantic Ten basement for the first time this season. The win lifted the Rams record to (7-23) overall and (4-11) in the league. Fordham falls to (10-18) and (3-12) in A-10 play placing them last in the conference standings with one game to play.

Rhody loses out its season Saturday at UMass at 4pm. The Minutemen lost a heartbreaker in overtime at Temple 90-88 Wednesday night. They will have revenge on their minds as they lost to Rhody in overtime February 1st at the Ryan Center.
