Brown Hammers Georgetown 45-7

After a month long training camp, the Brown University Football Team was champing at the bit to get out on the field to play a game. They got that opportunity Saturday and made the most of it. Powered by 3 John Spooney touchdowns, the Bears defeated Georgetown 45-7 at Brown Stadium.

While the Hoyas had played 3 games prior to Saturday’s match-up, it was the Bears who appeared to be in mid-season form. Brown took the opening kick-off and marched 92 yards down the field on 8 plays wrapping up the drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Donnelly (19-27 for 197 yds, 2 TD, o INT) to Alexander Phelan for a 7-0 lead.

That 7-0 lead was extended to 31-0 by halftime powered by senior running back John Spooney who rushed for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also caught a 24-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

That 31-0 lead was extended to 45-0 in the second half when back-up tailback’s Andrew Coke (39 yards rushing) and Robert Grebenc (42 yard rushing) each scored touchdowns.

Brown’s defense was also rock solid and almost shutout the Hoyas who scored with :28 seconds left in the game.

The win lifted Brown to (1-0) on the season while Georgetown falls to (1-3).

The Bears play their Ivy League opener next Saturday at Harvard at 7:30pm. The Crimson beat the University of San Diego 42-20 Saturday to improve to 1-0.

NOTES:

-Senior RB John Spooney returned to the Brown football team after taking a year off from the sport. The Ivy League’s 100m and 200m champion in track, Spooney wanted to concentrate solely on track as a junior but missed the sport of football. He was a sight for sore eyes according to Brown head coach Phil Estes. “Welcome back John Spooney,” he said. “John shook off the rust after not playing football last year and really made a difference. There are a lot of things we have to fix for next week against Harvard, but overall I’m pleased with our effort.”

-Brown co-captains Patrick Donnelly and Michael Yules led by example with their stellar play in week one. Donnelly was very efficient passing the ball taking what the Georgetown defense was giving him. When his receivers were well-covered, he ran the ball effectively finishing with 35 yards rushing on 6 carries. Yules had 2 sacks leading a stingy Brown defense.

-Given the margin of victory, Brown was able to rest many starters playing back-ups for most of the second half.

-Freshman Alexander Jette (North Attleboro, MA) had a strong debut for Brown returning 4 punts for a total of 82 yards. His longest punt return of the day was called back on a holding penalty.

-Brown’s game at Harvard nest Saturday (7:30pm) will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network.

-Despite opening their season three weeks after the rest of college football, the Ivy League had a strong showing in week one. Of the 8 teams in the league, only Columbia and Princeton lost their openers.

-Brown head coach Phil Estes is now 12-4 in season-openers.
