Mayor Angel Taveras has nominated Keith A. Oliveira to serve on the Providence School Board, recommending him to fill a seat on the school board that is currently vacant.

The nomination was submitted to the City Council for consideration this week. The City Council now has 30 days to consider and act upon Oliveira’s nomination.

“The School Board plays a critical role in accelerating efforts to bolster student achievement and give all students the education they need and deserve,” Taveras said. “I cannot think of a more qualified candidate to serve on the school board than Keith Oliveira. Keith is a graduate of the Providence public schools who brings an esteemed and lengthy record of leadership in public education and in our community.”

Oliveira worked 11 years for the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), serving until 2010 as a senior policy advisor and the Department of Education’s legislative liaison to the Rhode Island General Assembly. Oliveira has proven he is capable of taking on incredible responsibility, as he directly oversaw the $21 million construction of the Metropolitan Regional Career & Technical Center’s Providence Campus.

“I am excited to serve as a member of Providence's School Board on behalf of our students and their families, and look forward to working with the School Department and Mayor Taveras’ administration to continue efforts to transform Providence’s public schools,” said Oliveira.
