Providence Mayor Angel Taveras this morning will sign two anti-corruption ordinances into law.

One ordinance requires that lobbyists register with the city. The other bars corrupt city employees from receiving pensions—even if they are not actually convicted of a crime. Leaders of the City Council are expected to join Taveras at a signing ceremony at City Hall at 11 a.m., along with Common Cause Director John Marion and former director Phil West.

Below is an official description of the two ordinances:

The Lobbyist Disclosure Ordinance – This city ordinance, developed with the hard work of the City Council sponsors, Phil West, the former director of Common Cause, the Mayor’s Office and the Law Department will require lobbyists who lobby city government officials to register in a publicly accessible database. This clean government initiative is the first lobbyist registration ordinance in a city or town in Rhode Island’s history.

Pension Revocation for Dishonorable Service – Immediately after the Supreme Court ruled against the City of Providence in Ryan v. City of Providence, the Mayor called upon the Law Department to re-draft the Honorable Service Ordinance. The new ordinance clearly spells out that public employees who violate the public trust will not receive taxpayer dollars via a city pension.
