NEW: Langevin Spends Day Focusing on Job Training and Expanding Key Industries

Congressman Jim Langevin’s (D-RI) today attended events focused on spinal cord injury treatment, workforce training, and supporting job creation in industries with high growth potential.

] First, Langevin met at his District Office in Warwick with Trent Theroux, who has dedicated himself to improving the lives of people with spinal cord injuries after an accident in Narragansett Bay ten years ago nearly paralyzed him. At 11am, they discussed Theroux’s efforts to help the injured by working with the non-profit RISE Above Paralysis and through a planned 13-mile backstroke swim from Point Judith to Block Island in September to raise money and awareness. Langevin also addressed his amendment to increase spinal cord injury research, which passed the House last week.

The Congressman then attende a discussion about closing the state’s skills gap at the Genesis Center in Providence. He be joined by participants in the organization’s workforce development programs, which focus on sectors with available jobs, such as health care and culinary arts. The RISE Tour, initiated in response to companies struggling to find qualified employees, has taken Langevin to businesses, schools and job training facilities across his district to highlight initiatives that can help give workers the skills that will best serve them on the job market.

This afternoon, Langevin will visit two small businesses. He will further address the needs of and opportunities available in the health care industry at 1:15pm at Nalari Health in Providence. Following an office tour, he will meet with President and CEO Mark Treat and his staff about their work to improve delivery of health services through “online healthcare.” At 3pm, he will travel to North Kingstown to tour Subsalve USA, which manufactures underwater floatation devices.
