Former Secretary of State Susan Farmer has died after a courageous battle with cancer, GoLocal has learned from multiple sources.

Farmer was first female elected to state office in Rhode Island as Secretary of State in 1982, serving until 1986, and was most recently a member of the state Board of Elections.

The YWCA Rhode Island recently recognized Farmer, along with others, at its 5th Annual "Women Holding Office" celebration.  Farmer was honored with the Isabelle Ahearn O'Neill Award, named for the state's first female legislator.
