NEW: Ed Reform Group Endorses Speaker Fox & 3 Others in Local Races
Tuesday, October 23, 2012
The Rhode Island Campaign for Achievement Now (RI-CAN) Action Fund on Tuesday endorsed two Democrats, a Republican and an Independent candidate in four General Assembly races.

The endorsements, as well as RI-CAN's reason for supporting each candidate, are below:
Gordon Fox, a Democrat incumbent in District 4 in Providence and the current Speaker of the House, has supported critical initiatives for education such as the passage of a fair funding formula and implementation of a full-day kindergarten incentive program. In 2011, Fox led the House to pass landmark pension reform. Speaker Fox's continued leadership will be vital to transforming Rhode Island schools.
Donna Nesselbush is the Democratic incumbent State Senator representing District 15 in Pawtucket. While in office, she has been a steadfast champion for improving education in Rhode Island, receiving an A+ rating on RI-CAN Action Fund’s Legislative Report Card.
Dawson Hodgson is the Republican incumbent State Senator representing District 35 in North Kingstown, South Kingstown, East Greenwich and Narragansett. Senator Hodgson has been an unwavering voice for promoting excellence in Rhode Island schools, receiving an A+ rating on RI-CAN Action Fund’s Legislative Report Card.
Mary Ann Shallcross Smith is the Independent House candidate for District 46 in Pawtucket and Lincoln. She is also a past representative for District 46. Shallcross Smith stands with Rhode Island students on a range of issues including pension reform, rewarding excellence in teaching and the expansion of pre-kindergarten programs.

kiss of death for these races? RI-CAN'T couldn't even get their own Boss Tweed elected on the East Side.

Well of course Shallcross Smith wants the expansion of preschool programs since she owns numerous day care centers! Have to agree with malachi...RICAN's influence is questionable since it's own director couldn't be elected. I also thought RICAN claimed to be "apolitical."

Thanks for the info. Now I know who I will NOT be voting for. However RICANT votes, I vote the opposite.
