Congressman David Cicilline's campaign is questioning Republican opponent Brendan Doherty's commitment to preventing student loan interest rates for doubling by July.

Cicilline has co-sponsored legislation to pay for the current 3.4 percent interest rates to remain in tact by eliminating billions of dollars in subsidies to Big Oil, but he claims House Republicans have not offered a solution.

Doherty released a statement Tuesday calling for "common sense solutions" to the rate hike, but Cicilline says his statements have simply been "empty rhetoric."

"Brendan Doherty should tell Rhode Island how he would vote on this actual legislation," said Cicilline campaign manager Eric Hyers. "Does he side with the middle class or with Big Oil? Is he yet again supporting entrenched special interests at the expense of working families? If he was truly concerned with bipartisanship, he would stand up to his party bosses who are so clearly wrong on this issue. Until then, this is just more empty rhetoric."
