University of Virginia Professor of Politics Jennifer Lawless joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE where she spoke to the developing fallout from the meeting between President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin -- and why members of both parties in Congress have decried Trump's comments.
"I don't think anyone could have expected it to go this poorly," said Lawless of the meeting between Trump and Putin. "Trump left that press conference thinking he did a great job...on his way back, he realized Democrats and Republicans alike had a different impression."
Lawless noted how the White House went into damage control -- on overdrive -- on Tuesday.
"The White House talking points refuted what most people had actually seen," said Lawless. "The White House tried to get out the idea Donald Trump supports the US intelligence agencies -- which was antithetical to what was stated."
"It wasn't only that he said he was unsure about US intelligence -- but when push came to shove, he chose Putin's word over U.S. intelligence," said Lawless. "That has led both sides of the aisle to say [that it] met the legal standard of treasonous."
