Singer Darlene Love to Deliver PC Commencement Address

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Darlene Love will receive an honorary doctorate in Music and present the commencement address at Providence College on Sunday, May 17, 2015. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. 

Love's singing career started at age ten when she sang in a gospel choir at her dad's church. 

In the 1950's, Love joined The Blossoms and became the lead singer. The Blossoms were the first ever black, female back up group.

In the 60's, the Blossoms joined music producer Phil Spector's 'wall of sound' hit factory. Love recored hit songs for Spector like "He's a Rebel," He's Sure the Boy I Love," along with "Today I Met the Boy I'm Gonna Marry." 

Love left Spector in the 70's. 

Love acted in movies like Lethal Weapon throughout the 80's and 90's and in 1995,  Love received the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award for her lifelong contributions to the development of rhythm and blues music. 

Love was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
