Providence Rotary Awards $56K+ in Community Grants

Local children will benefit this year as The Providence Rotary Charities Foundation of the Rotary Club of Providence has just awarded grants totaling $56,100 to 22 local charitable groups focusing on aid to disadvantaged children in and around Providence.

Along with prior gifts for events serving the children of San Miguel School and Sophia Academy in Providence, and purchase of dictionaries for all third grade students in Providence, the Foundation’s total giving for the July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012 program year is expected to exceed $70,000.

“Thanks to generous support over the years from Rotarians and the wider community, we continue to partner with non-profits to help transform young lives in the City of Providence,” said Bryan Cook, foundation chairman. “It reflects the commitment to service of Rotarians in Providence and around the world.”

This year's grants

Adoption Rhode Island--$2,000

For an emergency fund to help children who have “aged out” of foster care.

Big Brothers of Rhode Island--$2,000

To purchase computer hardware and software.

Blessings in a Backpack--$4,800

To provide 60 students from San Miguel School with a backpack filled with food staples every weekend of the school year.

Camp JORI--$3,000

To provide scholarship assistance for summer camp.

Camp Ruggles--$3,000

To support camperships for campers ages 6-12 with special needs.

Camp Surefire--$2,500

To support camperships for children ages 6-16 with Type 1 diabetes. 

Community Preparatory School--$2,500

To fund two summer programs.

East Side / Mt. Hope YMCA--$2,500

To provide swimming lessons, recreational swimming, and competitive swim team opportunities.

Girl Scouts of Rhode Island--$2,500

To support a program for girls to build courage, confidence, and character.

Lyme Disease Association of Rhode Island--$1,000

To help fund the Rhode Island Chapter Lyme Disease Association’s educational campaign.

Mount Hope Neighborhood Association--$1,300

To provide Youth Development Center program scholarships.

PARI Independent Living Center--$2,500

To help purchase parts and supplies to assist individuals with disabilities. 

Providence Community Library--$4,000

To support the Providence Community Library’s Citywide Extended Learning Program.

ResilientKids--$2,500

To support a three-term implementation of yoga in one classroom in one of Providence’s lowest-performing schools.

Rhode Island Family Shelter--$1,500

Purpose:  To purchasing twin bed frames and mattress covers.

School One--$2,000

To help the school’s scholarship fund.

Southside Community Land Trust--$1,000

To help support the cost of operating the Children’s Garden.

The Steel Yard--$2,000

To support an intensive metalworking and public art enrichment program for youth.

Step Up Center International--$3,000

A matching grant for Glory Days Camp.

The Fund for UCAP--$3,000

To support the fund for UCAP’s Beyond School programs.

The Samaritans--$4,000

To underwrite the cost of 16 transit shelter signs.

Whitmarsh House--$3,500

To support case management service to help young men between the ages of 18 to 21 with housing, education, counseling, and support.

With membership including more than 125 men and women, the Rotary Club of Providence is one of the area’s oldest and largest service organizations. Its 100th anniversary was celebrated in 2011. Additional information is available at www.ProvidenceRotary.org.
